Know Your Score Celebrity Golf Tournament may open up to public in 2013

The Know Your Score Celebrity Golf Tournament and Gala will be moving to the Grande Dunes Resort Course and Marina Inn next year, possibly opening the door for spectators during the tournament for the first time.

The fifth annual Know Your Score event was held Saturday at Pawleys Plantation, and committed players included basketball legend Julius ?Dr. J.? Erving, former NFL players Ed ?Too Tall? Jones and Lynn Swann, former basketball players Gary Payton and Lenny Wilkins, and former baseball players Vida Blue and Joe Morgan among approximately 30 celebrities.

The event, which benefits Zero ? The Project to End Prostate Cancer, has been held at Pawleys Plantation for the past two years after three years at Long Bay Club and Kingston Plantation. The 2013 event is scheduled for Aug. 24-25.

Heath Carter, tournament director and Zero director of marketing and communications, said the Grande Dunes agreement is for one year.

?We?ll see how it goes,? Carter said. ?I think ideally we?d like to have it there long-term, but we?re waiting and working on some things. We?d like to keep it centrally located logistically and for our sponsors.?

Spectators next year are a possibility but not yet definite, as Carter will explore liabilities and approvals needed.

?My hope is to sell a limited number of tickets to the public to come out and watch the tournament,? Carter said.

In addition to the Know Your Score celebrity-am on the Strand, Zero is conducting 10 scramble tournaments across the country that don?t involve celebrities and also raise money and awareness for prostate cancer research.

That series is expected to expand next year and be called the Zero Prostate Cancer Golf Series, Know Your Score 2013. ?We?re hoping to expand the tournaments year after year and keep it growing,? Carter said.

The scramble events this year are being held in Myrtle Beach; Seattle; Rochester, N.Y.; Washington, D.C.; Tucson, Ariz.; New Mexico and Portland, Ore., where there are four. Six of the events are fairly large.

Organizers are still trying to determine how the national scramble series will tie into the Myrtle Beach celebrity-am.

Carter said possibilities include having a two-day championship and adding a course for a separate scramble tournament ? a series finale in Myrtle Beach using the national scrambles as qualifiers and inviting those players to mingle with celebs at a cocktail party.

?That would definitely add to the event and raise more money for prostate cancer,? Carter said.
