A 441-acre equine facility in Asharoken has been included into Suffolk County?s agricultural district, after a vote by the Legislature this week.
Asharoken Mayor Gregory Letica had opposed the move, claiming that Sandpiper Farm was in violation of the village?s zoning code because it is zoned as residential property.
The farm, where fox-hunting horses are trained, will likely receive a significant tax break by being an agricultural use, which is another reason that village officials opposed it.
Sandpiper paid more than $1 million in town and village property taxes last year, according to published reports.
The Suffolk County Agricultural and Farmland Protection Board had voted unanimously in May to support the Sandpiper?s application.
