ICE Shuts Down 2 SoCal Internet Businesses For Selling Fake Goods

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) ? Two Southern California-based Internet businesses were among several shut down by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement during a Cyber Monday crackdown on the online sales of counterfeit goods, officials announced Monday.

Special agents with Homeland Security Investigations in Ventura served seizure warrants for two domain names linked to www.autoforms8m.com.

The website claims to offer easy and affordable access to legal forms online and is suspected of selling counterfeit Adobe software, officials said.

?Preliminarily, federal investigators estimate the loss of revenue to Adobe at more than $3 million,? ICE agents said in a news release.

The second seizure involved the San Diego-based website, Staxxs on Deck, which sold counterfeit Nike footwear, officials said.

?In addition to selling counterfeit merchandise at its El Cajon storefront location, the company also operated a website ? www.23isking.com ? that offered knockoff Nike shoes online,? ICE said.

According to an affidavit, the company?s website made approximately $1.5 million in proceeds from the fake goods.

The annual crackdown, which began in 2010, resulted in the seizure of 132 domain names that sold fake goods.

Rocket sirens pierce the Tel Aviv 'bubble'

Tel Aviv is a city that symbolizes efforts by Israelis to maintain a sense of normalcy despite the Arab-Israeli conflict. But now the new normal here includes the opening of municipal bomb shelters.

By Joshua Mitnick,?Correspondent / November 18, 2012

Israelis take cover as an air raid siren warns of incoming rockets from Gaza, next to an Iron Dome defense system in Tel Aviv, Saturday. Israel bombarded the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip with nearly 200 airstrikes early Saturday, the military said, widening a blistering assault on Gaza rocket operations to include the prime minister's headquarters, a police compound and a vast network of smuggling tunnels.

Video footage showing bathers sprinting from a hotel beach on Saturday?with rocket intercepts overhead served as a jarring contrast to the city?s image as a destination for carefree pleasure seekers. On Sunday, Tel Aviv was targeted by two separate rocket salvos, though all of them were shot down.

Not only does Tel Aviv symbolize Israel?s capital city for business and culture, it?s also a city that symbolizes efforts by Israelis to maintain a sense of normalcy despite the daily feuding of the Arab-Israeli conflict. But now the new normal in Tel Aviv includes the opening of municipal bomb shelters to the public.

"People here hold up the banner of freedom," says Motti Haimovich, the owner of a French bakery in central Tel Aviv. "When there are rockets, then there isn't any freedom."

On the morning after the first siren last Thursday evening, weekend caf? goers at the Le Moulin bakery showed for their usual coffee and croissant to check in with one another, says owner Motti Haimovich. But when a siren sounded at the height of the midday rush on Friday, the caf? emptied quickly.

That type of blow to the daily routine is being held up by Palestinian militants as an achievement. For Hamas and other militant groups in the Gaza Strip the very success of placing Tel Aviv under attack ? even if there are no casualties ? is a symbolic milestone matched by no one else in the region since Saddam Hussein fired Scuds at the Jewish state in the first Gulf War in 1991. Because of that, many Israeli commentators say that the prime minister may want to prolong the fighting.

Israelis derisively refer to the city as "the State of Tel Aviv" to impugn it as a mecca for out of touch armchair liberals who still insist on pushing the peace process with the Palestinians. The plight of rocket attacks could remake the attitudes of Israelis who dismiss the city and its residents as na?ve peaceniks.

"Now maybe we are even," said Israeli author Etgar Keret, referring to the dividing lines between armchair liberals and mainstream Israelis.?"Now we can start talking." (The original version of this story misstated the source of the quote.)

Residents of Tel Aviv often are nostalgic about that period around the first Gulf War, which left the city virtually unscathed. They have more serious and pained memories of the second Palestinian intifada, which unleashed a wave of bombings around the city.

So far, rockets haven?t turned Tel Aviv into a ghost town like Israeli cities in southern Israel. Part of the reason is that none of the rockets have hit buildings so far, giving people more confidence to keep their daily routine.

"Has the world stopped?" asked Madaleine Koger, a retired shopowner, who was forced by a siren to interrupt a bike ride on the sea promenade to take cover in a hotel basement. "For this I should stop all of our life?"

Iconic street foods every world traveler must try

While many travelers make it a priority to book a table at Michelin-starred restaurants around the world, some of the best food ? street food ? can be had for a fraction of the cost, in the most unlikely of places. From stainless steel push carts and dubious-looking night market stalls, to kiosks and the backs of bicycles, street food is ubiquitous around the world.

Fallon as Pattinson: 'Thanksgiving is stupid!'

NBC

By Anna Chan, TODAY

Gobble this! Jimmy Fallon introduced his latest installment of "Robert Is Bothered," the Thanksgiving edition, on "Late Night" Wednesday.

Before revealing the clip, the comedian explained, "It turns out Robert Pattinson is really really bothered by a lot of things. This guy is so angry ... that a couple of years ago, he started his own website called RobertIsBothered.com just so he can talk about all the different things that bother him."

In the video, the late-night host, dressed as the actor's "Twilight" vampire, Edward Cullen, launches into a tirade about the holiday.

"Thanksgiving bothers me," Fallon-as-Pattinson-as-Cullen gripes. "Thanksgiving is stupid! And which day is Thanksgiving anyway? All I know is it's the fourth Thursday in November. What kind of a day is that?! ... Well guess what, Thanksgiving? No particular date, no particular thank you!"

But it wasn't just the lack of a concrete date that bothered the imposter. Turns out he's not impressed by the traditional foods either.

"Turkeys are stupid, they bother me," fake Pattinson complains. "You murder a turkey, rip out its insides, then you shove a bunch of bread up its butt, and then you cook it for hours, then expect me to eat it and say thanks!"

He goes on to complain about other Turkey Day favorites: "Stuffing, cooked in a butt, not sanitary. Butternut squash, wants to be a pumpkin but it's not. Get a real job. Cranberries, too sour, no thank you. And here we go, mashed potatoes ... actually, I like mashed potatoes."

Check out what else Fallon-as-Pattinson-as-Cullen gripes about (but be warned, there is some salty-but-bleeped language):

This isn't the first time "Robert Pattinson" has complained about things. Past "Robert Is Bothered" videos have taken on the subjects of Snickers ads, "Harry Potter" star Daniel Radcliffe, Christmas, iPads and more.

What did you think of the latest "Robert Is Bothered"? Which one is your favorite? Tell us on our Facebook page!

Undisturbed excitation with pulsed light

ScienceDaily (Nov. 22, 2012) ? The best method to obtain the most precise information on the inner structure of atoms and molecules is to excite them by means of resonant laser light. Unfortunately, just this laser light (above a certain intensity) can lead to measurable modifications within the atom's electron shell. Scientists of the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) have now shown experimentally how to prevent such "light shifts." This confirms the advantages of "hyper" Ramsey excitation that had already been predicted theoretically.

This method can make their optical ytterbium atomic clocks even more accurate. Furthermore, "hyper" Ramsey excitation can be helpful in numerous applications where the focus lies on a precise, controlled interaction between atoms and laser light. The results have been published in the current issue of the scientific journal Physical Review Letters.

"Light shift" means that intense laser light modifies the position of the atomic energy levels; the shift depends on the intensity and the wavelength of the laser used. If one is seeking the properties of the atom as an undisturbed quantum object, this shift must be either prevented or corrected. With the new procedure, which has been applied experimentally for the first time at PTB, a sequence of judiciously selected laser pulses used to excite the atom eliminates the disturbing light shift effect.

The basic idea of using pulsed radiation to perform precise measurements goes back to Norman Ramsey, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics in 1989 for this finding. With this method, a first laser pulse is shot at the atom, where it starts a resonant excitation. Then the pulsation excited in the electron shell of the atom continues undisturbed "in the dark" until eventually a second laser pulse completes the comparison between the resonance frequency of the atom and the laser frequency. A similar approach is also usual in clock comparisons: two clocks are set to the same time, they are then left to run on and are eventually compared again. The result shows which clock was faster or slower than the other.

The signal of the Ramsey excitation contains, due to the dark phase between the laser pulses, an averaging over the positions of the states of the atom with and without a light shift. In principle, it would be possible to compensate for the light shift by modifying the laser frequency by exactly this quantity (exclusively) during the pulses. This, however, would not bring great improvement from a practical point of view as the precise information concerning the disturbance of the atom should be known to begin with. In 2010, a group of scientists (also with PTB's participation) suggested a method they called "hyper" Ramsey excitation in order to solve this problem. This theoretical consideration has now been confirmed experimentally for the first time. In the case of "hyper" Ramsey excitation, a third laser pulse of the same intensity and the same frequency, but with an inverted phase, is inserted into the dark phase. This third laser pulse automatically compensates for possible errors which could occur due to misjudgment as regards the size of the light shift and due to small variations in the laser intensity during the light pulses.

Realizing "hyper" Ramsey excitation experimentally succeeded in an atomic transition which allows very slight frequency variations to be detected and, at the same time, exhibits a large light shift, since a high laser intensity is necessary for its excitation. It is an electrical octupole transition in the Yb+ ion which is being investigated as a basis for an optical clock. The experiment confirmed the theoretical predictions concerning the advantages of "hyper" Ramsey excitation and attained a 10,000-fold suppression of the light shift. This opens up the possibility for the optical Yb+ clock to achieve even greater accuracy. This method could also be interesting for other researchers trying to obtain a precisely controlled interaction between atoms and laser light, for instance in the field of quantum information processing.

Apple pulling the plug on Messages beta for OS X Lion on December 14th

DNP Apple reportedly pulling the plug on Messages beta for OS X Lion on December 14th 2012

Apple is notifying OS X Lion users that the platform's preview of Messages will end on December 14th. Originally available as a free beta download for Lion 10.7, Messages went on to become an official feature of Mountain Lion 10.8. Obtained by Cult of Mac, the email from Apple advises that in order to continue using Messages, you'll need to upgrade to Mountain Lion. While it's saddening to have pay for an app that you're accustomed to having for free, keep in mind that this was only a preview. Besides, the upgrade to Mountain Lion is $20 and if you can afford any of Apple's products, we're pretty sure that this expense won't be too much of a stretch. Be sure to take a look at the email in question after the break, because it could be lurking somewhere in your junk mail folder.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. on Twitter? It could finally happen soon

Is NASCAR's biggest Twitter holdout finally ready to start tweeting?

After sending tweets as part of a sponsor promotion on Wednesday, Dale Earnhardt Jr. says he's more open to the idea than ever before.

During a series of photo shoots for 2013, Earnhardt Jr. conducted a "takeover" of the @NationalGuard Twitter account, sending self-portraits and answering fan questions submitted with a #DaleTakeover hashtag.

But by the end of the day, Earnhardt Jr. wasn't just answering questions; he was sending out tweets on his own:

Answering my own question. @Pandora_Radio is my favorite iPhone app. They revolutionized the way I listen to music.

Random question: What is a mini-series that you could sit and watch for 8 hours straight? Mine is "Lonesome Dove"

Want to hear a good song? Listen to "I'm on Fire" by @TownMountain. It's a @Springsteen cover.

So with all that, will the @DaleJr Twitter account (which already has more than 162,000 followers despite no tweets) finally become active?

"It makes sense, probably enough to consider it," Earnhardt Jr. said. "I enjoyed it. I see how it could be a lot of fun, but I don't know. I liked the interaction though."

In the past, Earnhardt Jr. has said he doesn't want to tweet because he feels the fan expectations will be too high. He doesn't want to commit to having a social media account.

"I had Facebook and MySpace and all that way back in the day, and I just get burned out feeling that responsibility to keep it updated," he said in 2010. "You know, what for? You gotta get out of the house every once in awhile.

"I just had to cut it all out. It was like I was a parent having to take care of this thing."

Staff writers Robbie Andreu and Adam West take a closer look at this season's final game in The Swamp.

Ealey, Gators familiar foes

The Gators certainly are familiar with Jacksonville State senior running back Washaun Ealey, and he with them. He's the former Georgia Bulldog that middle linebacker Brandon Spikes intentionally poked in the eye in the Gators' 41-17 thrashing of the Bulldogs in 2009. When Spikes' poke went viral on YouTube, Ealey said he really didn't have a problem with what Spikes did. But UF didn't like it. The school suspended Spikes for the first half of the next game (Vanderbilt). But, back to Ealey. Faced with some disciplinary issues at UGA, he transferred to Jacksonville State in 2011. This season, the former 'Dog has rushed for 718 yards and 10 touchdowns. The UF defense will focus a lot of its attention on containing Ealey.

Plenty of quarterback experience for Gamecocks

With starter Jeff Driskel out with a sprained ankle, the Gators go into today's game with very little experience at quarterback. True sophomore Jacoby Brissett will be starting his third game and his backup, redshirt sophomore Tyler Murphy, has taken only a handful of snaps in his career, all in mop-up duty. It's totally different for Jacksonville State. The Gamecocks have enough experience at quarterback for two teams. Starter Marques Ivory and Coty Blanchard will both play, and both have thrown for more than 2,000 yards in their JSU careers. Ivory has thrown for 4,663 yards and Blanchard 2,333. JSU is the only school in all of the FCS to have a pair of 2,000-yard career passers. The Gators, of course, don't even have one.

Back to the 1980s ? again

Last week when the Gators broke out their orange jerseys against Louisiana-Lafayette, it brought back memories of the 1980s. Playing Jacksonville State today will do the same, in some way. This is the school where former UF coach Charley Pell got his start as a college head coach. The Gamecocks made him the youngest coach in the nation when they hired the 28-year-old to take over the program way back in 1969. In Pell's second season, JSU was a perfect 10-0. In his first seasons with the Gamecocks, Pell compiled an impressive record of 33-13 before leaving to become the defensive coordinator at Virginia for two seasons. In 1976, he was named the defensive coordinator at Clemson. A year later, he was named the Tigers' head coach. In 1979, Pell replaced Doug Dickey at Florida. Pell, of course, was fired amid an NCAA scandal early in the 1984 season. He died of cancer in 2001 at the age of 60.

FCS test?

Florida's 50-game winning streak against non-BCS opponents may look good on paper, but it hasn't always looked great on the field. Almost exactly a year ago, UF struggled in a closer-than-it-looked 54-32 win over another FCS opponent in Furman, a game in which the Paladins tallied 446 total yards (including 233 on the ground) and only trailed by five points going into the fourth quarter. Jacksonville State, which upset Ole Miss in a double-overtime game in 2010, will surely be looking for a similar result today.

Give it a rest

Many Florida fans believed these two games following SEC play would give UF's starters a chance to breathe after eight straight conference games, but it didn't turn out that way last week as the Gators needed a desperate late-game rally to defeat Louisiana-Lafayette, 27-20. With a looming rivalry game against Florida State on the horizon, the Gators could use a fast start today so that their starters are well-rested for the 10th-ranked Seminoles next weekend.

March toward a milestone

What once seemed like a formality is now very much in question. With two regular-season games and a bowl ahead, Mike Gillislee stands 158 yards from becoming Florida's first 1,000-yard rusher since Ciatrick Fason racked up 1,267 yards in 2004. Gillislee, who set a high-water mark for himself of 1,500 rushing yards and 24 touchdowns in the preseason, won't reach those lofty numbers this year with 842 yards and seven touchdowns so far. The senior hasn't had a rushing score since his 146-yard, two-touchdown outburst against a tough LSU defense on Oct. 6. A date with an FCS opponent that allows 186.2 rushing yards per game could be just what Gillislee needs to get back on track.

Receiving attention

While most of the crowd's focus will be on Florida's 19-man senior class today, the UF secondary will be paying attention to one of the Gamecocks' seniors. Jacksonville State receiver Alan Bonner is having a great season with 45 catches for 745 yards and eight touchdowns. He'll look to go out with a bang today in his final college game. Bonner has fared well in the past against SEC competition with four career touchdown catches in games against Ole Miss, Kentucky and Arkansas.

Indiana blast investigation focuses on natural gas

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? The search for what caused a massive, deadly explosion that rocked an Indianapolis neighborhood turned to natural gas Monday, with officials checking gas lines and a homeowner saying a problem furnace could be to blame.

The National Transportation Safety Board sent investigators to check gas main and other lines serving the neighborhood where two people were killed and seven injured in the weekend blast. Local gas supplier Citizens Energy said it also was checking gas lines and a meter at the home that exploded.

But officials cautioned that it was too soon to rule out other causes, saying only that they do not believe a meth lab was to blame for the explosion that obliterated two homes and severely damaged dozens of others.

"It's too early to speculate that this might have been caused by a gas leak," Citizens Energy spokeswoman Sarah Holsapple said at an afternoon news briefing.

The owner of one of the homes that was destroyed said there was a problem with the furnace in the last few weeks.

John Shirley, 50, of Noblesville told The Associated Press that he received a text message within the last week and a half from his daughter, who complained that the furnace in the home where she lived with her mother and her mother's boyfriend had broken. The malfunction had forced them to stay in a hotel, the girl said.

When Shirley asked if the furnace had been fixed, his daughter said yes. He said he wasn't aware of any additional problems until he heard from his daughter again Sunday morning.

"I get a text from my daughter saying 'Dad, our home is gone.' Then I called my ex-wife and she said what happened," he said.

His ex-wife, Monserrate Shirley, declined to comment Monday.

Scott Davis, president and principal engineer of GexCon US, an explosion investigation firm, questioned whether a furnace could cause the type of damage seen in the neighborhood. Furnaces have multiple safety triggers that prevent them from releasing that much natural gas.

"For a furnace to allow that much gas through, you'd have to defeat many of the safety features," he said.

Investigators said it could be some time before they determine a cause for the blast that sparked a massive fire, blew out windows, collapsed ceilings and shook homes up to three miles away.

"It's a methodical investigation. You have to move one step at a time," said Gary Coons, the city's homeland security director.

Public Safety Director Troy Riggs said investigators will treat the area as a crime scene until they rule out foul play.

The blast forced about 200 people out of their homes in the once-tidy neighborhood of one- and two-story single-family houses. Some have been allowed to reoccupy their homes, and others have been escorted in to retrieve valuables and other belongings. Adam Collins, the city's deputy code enforcement director, said 29 remained uninhabitable Monday.

Mark Karnes, whose house is four doors down from the blast site and suffered severe structural damage, hoped to retrieve clothes and look for his cat. But he also questioned the wisdom of going back inside the house given the extent of the damage.

"Because the walls bowed out and separated from the ceiling, I don't think it's safe," he said.

The blast flattened the house Shirley co-owns with his ex-wife and one next door that belonged to second-grade teacher Jennifer Longworth and her husband, John. Indianapolis police said Monday the bodies of the pair were found in the basement of their home, which was leveled in the blast.

A candlelight vigil was held Sunday night at the school where Jennifer Longworth teaches. Her husband's employer, consumer electronics company Indy Audio Labs, issued a statement Monday saying it was "saddened by the loss."

Greenwood Community Schools Superintendent David Edds said Jennifer Longworth had taught at Southwest Elementary School for 12 years. Her husband had worked at Indy Audio Labs for 10 years and was director of product development and technology, according to the company.

John Shirley said Jennifer Longworth was quiet but funny and her husband was a huge Indianapolis Colts fan who maintained a garden of beautiful wildflowers along the side of the house.

"They were just very sweet people," he said.

Indiana real estate records show Shirley's house had been for sale for a year until it was taken off the market in March.

SNB's Zurbruegg says cbank ready to act to support economy if necessary

ZURICH (Reuters) - The Swiss National Bank is prepared to take additional measures to protect the Swiss economy should a further slowdown make it necessary, a policymaker was quoted as saying on Sunday.

SNB board member Fritz Zurbruegg, however, did not specify what action the bank might take.

After investors flooded into the Swiss franc to seek refuge from the euro zone debt crisis, the SNB set a cap of 1.20 francs to the euro in September 2011 to safeguard the Swiss economy against deflation and recession.

Zurbruegg, who joined the SNB at the start of August, said there had been a general weakening of the global economy this year which had dragged on Switzerland's growth.

"Based on the IMF projections it can be supposed that the weakening of the Swiss economy has increased some more," Zurbruegg told the NZZ am Sonntag newspaper, adding that the risks to the Swiss economy were to the downside.

"If we see the danger that the situation is deteriorating and additional measures become necessary to achieve our monetary policy target, we will also do that," he said.

Switzerland's economy shrank unexpectedly in the second quarter as the crisis in the euro zone dampened demand for Swiss goods and services.

At its September policy meeting the SNB cut its 2012 growth forecast to 1 pct from 1.5 pct and kept its target range for the three-month Libor at 0.00-0.25 percent.

Asked whether it was a problem that ultra-low interest rates made it hard for pension funds to make returns on investments and could cause the housing market to overheat, Zurbruegg said there was no alternative to the SNB's policy.

"In view of the threat of a deep recession and the risk of a deflationary development there was and there is no alternative. If we concentrate on maintaining price stability, we will achieve better results overall than if we react to certain excesses."

He said the SNB expects a slightly positive inflation rate in 2013 and forecasts prices to rise 0.4 percent in 2014. This is still far below the bank's 2 percent target. The SNB holds its next monetary policy assessment meeting on December 13.

Zurbruegg said the franc remained overvalued at 1.20 per euro and the SNB would continue to invest its currency reserves in ways that do not disrupt the market.

The SNB's reserves have ballooned to around 70 percent of the country's annual output, as it has sometimes had to inject large sums to make the cap on the franc stick.

But an easing of market tension in the euro zone in September has allowed the franc to weaken towards 1.21 per euro, stemming the need for the SNB to intervene and allowing it to diversify out of euros in the third quarter.

"As long as we maintain the minimum exchange rate of 1.20 to the euro, it will have the consequences that we will build up currency reserves, that will have to be invested," he said.

"We are acting with consideration to the market because we are not interested in irritating other central banks or distorting the market."

Chernobyl cleanup workers had significantly increased risk of leukemia

Thursday, November 8, 2012

A 20-year study following 110,645 workers who helped clean up after the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident in the former Soviet territory of Ukraine shows that the workers share a significant increased risk of developing leukemia. The results may help scientists better define cancer risk associated with low doses of radiation from medical diagnostic radiation procedures such as computed tomography scans and other sources.

In the journal Environmental Health Perspectives this week, an international team led by scientists at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and the Chernobyl Research Unit at the Radiation Epidemiology Branch of the National Cancer Institute describes the increased risks of leukemia among these workers between 1986 and 2006. The risk included a greater-than-expected number of cases of chronic lymphocytic leukemia, which many experts did not consider to be associated with radiation exposure in the past.

The new work is the largest and longest study to date involving Chernobyl cleanup workers who worked at or near the nuclear complex in the aftermath of the accident.

Overall, there were 137 cases of leukemia among the workers over the 20-year span of the study, and 16 percent of those cancers were attributable to the Chernobyl radiation exposure, the team found.

The findings shed light on the thorny issue of estimating cancer risk from low doses of radiation ? an issue of importance to miners, nuclear workers and anyone who is chronically exposed to low levels of radiation at work or patients who receive sizeable radiation doses when undergoing medical diagnostic tests.

"Low doses of radiation are important," said the lead researcher Lydia Zablotska, MD, PhD, an associate professor of epidemiology and biostatistics at UCSF. "We want to raise awareness of that."

Worst Nuclear Accident of All Time

The nearly 111,000 Ukrainian workers in the study were among the more than 500,000 former Soviets who worked directly on the front lines in the aftermath of Chernobyl disaster, which was the worst nuclear accident of the 20th century followed by the 2011 Fukushima disaster in Japan.

It began in the early morning hours of April 26, 1986 when a planned test of a backup system for operating cooling pumps went awry. A combination of human error and unsafe reactor design led to the runaway production of heat in Chernobyl's Reactor No. 4, which quickly caused two massive explosions, ruptured the reactor, crumbled the building, exposed the nuclear core, rained radioactive debris around the compound and spread fallout through the atmosphere over the Soviet Union and Europe.

Many of the Ukrainian workers were exposed to high levels of radiation because they were part of the teams that helped sweep up contaminated debris from the immediate area ? much of which was highly radioactive. Some of them, in fact, reached lifetime limits of radiation exposure within a matter of a few hours.

Although an elevated radiation-related risk of leukemia was not surprising, given the level of exposure among many of these workers, what did surprise Zablotska and her colleagues was the elevated risk of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), which was similar in size to the risk estimated for non-CLL leukemia.

Leukemia and Low-Dose Radiation

For many years, doctors have known that ionizing radiation from an X-ray source or produced by the decay of radioactive elements can cause leukemia, because it can penetrate the body, expose bone marrow to the radiation and damage DNA. But while scientists have understood this basic mechanism for decades, the question of how much leukemia risk is associated with moderate or low doses of radiation has been hard to answer.

For many years, the best estimates came from long-term studies involving survivors of the 1945 atomic bomb detonations over Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan during World War II. People in the immediate vicinity of the blasts were exposed to various levels of radiation, and in the decades afterward, their health was monitored and the increase in cancer tracked.

From those assessments of cancer risk, scientists estimated risks from lower doses by extrapolating the data down. But there have always been problems with this approach, said Zablotska. Atomic bomb survivors were bathed in gamma or neutron rays, while someone who undergoes a CT scan in the U.S. is exposed to X-rays, a different type of radiation. Moreover, extrapolating risks for Japanese population to Western population is further confounded by differences in genetics, lifestyle and diet between the two.

The new work helps to bridge this gap because the doses received by the Ukrainian cleanup workers falls somewhere in between the high level received by the Japanese atomic bomb victims and the lower levels received by people who undergo extensive medical scans.

It also challenges the idea that chronic lymphocytic leukemia is not linked to radiation exposure ? something that earlier studies of atomic bomb survivors had seemed to support.

The genetic makeup of the Japanese population may have hidden any increased risk, Zablotska said, because they are much less likely to develop this type of cancer anyway. Chronic lymphocytic leukemia accounts for only 3 percent of all cases of leukemia in Japan ? as opposed to about one-third of all leukemia cases in the U.S. and 40 percent of all cases of leukemia in Ukraine.

Lionsgate reported a big $77.5 million in second quarter earnings?due in part to summer films and its huge 2012 blockbuster, "The Hunger Games."

Wall Street predicted $621.8 million in total revenue for the company, a number that Lionsgate blew past reporting a 97 percent jump to a total of $707 million in revenue.

Despite a decline 29 percent decline in television, Lionsgate?reported a theatrical revenue bump of $93.9 million for the quarter ending September 30 to $116.2 million in part to three films, neither which performed especially well domestically:?

Rubber block texts you when bad things happen

11 hrs.

For those worried about frozen pipes, flooded basements or a teenage son or daughter sneaking out at night, get your hands on Twine, a Wi-Fi-connected sensor-laden rubber block that alerts you when things go awry.

You can also set it up to ping you when good ? or at least helpful ? things happen, such as when the clothes dryer stops or the mail is delivered.

The gizmo is the brainchild of MIT Media Lab graduates David Carr and John Kestner who raised over half a million dollars on the crowd funding site Kickstarter to turn their idea into reality. They started shipping products this week via their company Supermechanical.?

The 2.7-inch square block runs for months on a pair of AA batteries ? and it will email you when the batteries are running low. It comes loaded with temperature, vibration and orientation sensors. There?s an expansion connector so you can add additional sensors to track moisture or the opening of a door or window.

To make this wizardry useful, people decide what they want to monitor and, with a Web app, set up rules that trigger Twine to send an alert via text, tweet or email.

For example, put the Twine on a pipe and set it up to send an alert when the temperature drops below 40 degrees F, long enough to take action before the pipes freeze. Use the vibration sensor to send alerts when the clothes dryer stops spinning.

The gadget costs $99. For $134, you?ll get the magnetic door-and-window?sensor as well, which is helpful, for example, to pinpoint exactly?when your teen snuck in the back door after curfew.
