DETROIT (Reuters) - Ford Motor Co is on track to sell 2.2 million cars under its main brand this year, up 7 percent from 2011, the automaker said on Saturday, but the company has acknowledged losing market share as it struggled to keep up with consumer demand.
It marks the second straight year the No. 2 U.S. automaker has surpassed the 2 million threshold.
The projected sales jump for the Ford brand falls short of the overall industry's gains, which many analysts expect to exceed 13 percent in 2012.
This year is the third in a row that industry sales have climbed by double digits, as American automakers rebound from a deep recession that pushed Ford's rivals, General Motors Co and Chrysler Group LLC, into bankruptcy in 2009.
Earlier this year, Ford said it expected to lose market share in the United States because it could not build enough cars and trucks to satisfy consumer demand. Consumers also are buying fewer pickup trucks than in past years.
Last year, Ford sold just under 2.1 million cars and trucks under its main brand in the United States. When adding its upscale Lincoln brand, Ford sold more than 2.1 million cars last year.

After the communication breakdown over surge pricing last New Year’s Eve, Uber is taking precautions to make sure users are aware of fare increases next week. Surge pricing has become more common now among Uber users but when fares increase dramatically, it catches consumers off guard. So to prevent any surprises. Uber customers will be alerted to the surge pricing multiple which they have to confirm and accept before making any request for a ride. Uber says that when there are extreme spikes in demand on the evening, customers will also have to take Uber?s ?Surge Sobriety Test.? And Uber?s Fare Estimator will give all customers the ability to estimate their fare prior to any ride request. Uber warns in a blog post: It?s going to be a crazy night and Ubers are going to be pricey, so here are a few pointers to keep in mind. The fare estimate feature will only be available for the iPhone app, unfortunately. And all riders will need to accept the fare multiplier before finalizing a booking. Uber says the average surge multiple will be about 2 times normal prices, during the worst times (12:30 AM until 2:45 AM), but prices during extreme spikes could cost you $100 before time and mileage charge. Uber adds that the most expensive times to take an Uber are 8:30pm ? 9:45pm and 12:30am ? 2:45am. The best times to take an Uber on NYE are before 7pm, 10pm ? 12:10am and 3am on. The company’s CEO and founder Travis Kalanick will also be holding a live chat for any one who has questions about surge pricing on New Year’s Eve. Uber clearly learned its lesson from last year, when users were caught off guard by steep prices caused by surge pricing. For example, one user was charged $75 for a two-minute car ride. With the sobriety test, and fare estimator, the company is giving users all the information they need to decide if a pricey car ride is worth the splurge. The sobriety test is particularly interesting, and I wonder if this will become more widely used in the app. Ride-sharing app SideCar also warned users today of its surge pricing that will take place on New Year’s Eve.
Astronomers say they used a new statistical technique to find four possible super-Earths orbiting in the habitable zone of two stars within 22 light-years of Earth, Gliese 667C and tau Ceti.

Astronomers say they have uncovered evidence for what could be four super-Earth planets orbiting within the habitable zones of two stars within 22 light-years of Earth.

Three of those candidate planets are among a tightly packed clutch of five that orbit Gliese 667C, part of a triple-star system 22 light-years away in the constellation Scorpius. The other possible planet is one of five orbiting tau Ceti, a sun-like star 12 light-years away in the constellation Cetus.
Taken together, the detections not only add to accumulating evidence that planets look to be more common than stars ? and that planets in habitable zones could be more common than previously thought, some of researchers reporting the finds say.
The finds also illustrate the power of improved statistical tools to boldly uncover candidate planets where no planet had been found before.
The evidence for these candidate planets requires independent confirmation, the researchers caution.?Still, the tools represent "a real breakthrough," says Steven Vogt, an astronomer at the University of California at Santa Cruz and a member of the team reporting the results for tau Ceti. The approach the team took leaves only about one chance in 3 million that the detections could herald something other than a planet.
Since the mid-1990s, astronomers have bagged more than 850 extra-solar planets. The ultimate goal is to find rocky planets with Earth-like masses orbiting within their stars' habitable zones ? a region where under the right conditions, liquid water can form stable pools on the surface. Liquid water is considered an essential ingredient for organic life.
Different groups of astronomers had aimed three telescopes for various lengths of time at tau Ceti and found nothing. Led by Mikko Tuomi at the University of Hertfordshire in Britain, the team reporting this latest analysis applied relatively new statistical tools to the combined data from these telescopes.
The result: "Five planets came out: boom, boom, boom, boom, boom ... as clear as a bell," Dr. Vogt says.
Tau Ceti has about 78 percent of our own sun's mass, but its composition is quite similar, Dr. Tuomi's team reports. Its candidate planets range from 2 to 6.6 times Earth's mass.
The innermost object orbits the star once every 14 days, while the outermost takes 642 days to make its circuit. The fourth planet from the star, with a 168-day orbit, travels well within a zone where liquid water could remain stable on the planet's surface, the team estimates. However, the results don't speak directly to what the planets are made of.?
A similar story has played out for Philip Gregory, an astronomer at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. Previous researchers had found two planets orbiting Gliese 667C, a red dwarf with 31 percent of the sun's mass. Using a broadly similar statistical approach, he reports detecting the initial two, plus three more planets. Three of the five fall within the star's habitable zone, he estimates.

The Reality
The Wii U had an original launch window between March 2012 and December 2012 and eventually debuted on November 18, 2012, so gamers experienced a predictable pre-order frenzy for the holiday season.

A black colored deluxe set (32 GB storage), Wii U GamePad controller, GamePad stylus, sensor bar, console AC adapter, GamePad AC adapter, HDMI cable, Nintendo Land game, GamePad Stand, GamePad Cradle, console stand, and digital promotion eligibility for $349.99.
The Wii U is backward-compatible with Wii games as well as the Wii remotes, Wii MotionPlus remote, classic controller, and balance board. The Wii menu appears separately when loading Wii game discs.
The Wii U is not backward-compatible with GameCube games, which diminishes use of your existing game library, but work well on the developer side so they can develop an experience that cooperates with existing systems instead of trying to replace them.
Setup works very well with matching color cords for power (yellow), HDMI, and the sensor bar (orange) plus a separate cord for GamePad similar to the Wii U power cord. The GamePad cord is not the same as the Nintendo DS/DSi/3DS handheld console power/battery charging cord. The GamePad cord plug is just a bit bigger and wider.
Next follow the quick start guide to establish your Nintendo Network ID and internet connection settings (maximum of six). Up to 12 users are available with unique parental controls for each. Users can perform a transfer from the Nintendo Wii to the Wii U where both systems are connected to a television.
Players can transfer Miis to the Wii U from the Nintendo Wii and/or Nintendo 3DS. Like the Wii transfer the process gets fairly detailed.
The Wii U has 1080p support and wireless (IEEE 802.11b/g/n) connection.?The Wii U supports SD memory cards (port in front) and external USB storage with four ports (two in front and two in back).
Power buttons on the GamePad and console can be turned off when held for at least one second. The Wii U has activates an automatic power off feature after one hour of inactive use. The console and GamePad have impressive, reflective finishes that make cleaning relatively easily.
Wii U console weighs about 3.5 pounds and is capable of supporting two Wii U GamePad controllers, up to four Wii Remote (or Wii Remote Motion Plus) controllers or Wii U Pro Controllers plus Wii accessories such as the Nunchuk, Classic Controller and Wii Balance Board.
A separate battery hatch on the front right contains a lithium coin cell battery (CR2032) that needs replaced when the console clock stops functioning.
Users can sync up to 10 controllers ? my ?dream team? would be two GamePads, four Motion Plus remotes, and four Wii U Pro Controllers (perfect for games like Call of Duty: Black Ops II). GamePads are scheduled to be sold separately in early 2013.
The Wii U Pro Controller (sold separately from the Wii U) charges for 4.5 hours and lasts approximately 80 hours. It has a replaceable battery (similar procedure as GamePad).
The new GamePad must be synced or paired with the Wii U console ? a similar process for existing Wii controllers except the press console sync button twice then press sync on GamePad.
Pre-installed electronic manuals are also included for convenience and contain helpful web links. As with the Wii, avoid radio frequency interference so the synched remotes work properly and no issues arise for the near-field communication used in the GamePad.
The lightweight, 1.1 pound Wii U GamePad becomes the biggest game controller while offering other options similar to a computer tablet. One GamePad is included with every console.
The 10.5-inch wide GamePad includes a touchpad screen, two analog sticks, microphone, and separate speaker system and volume control with headphone jack. The sound is surprisingly strong and often has different sounds than the television and other entertaining effects.
The removable and rechargeable GamePad battery lasts about three to five hours after charging for approximately 2.5 hours. The Wii U Pro Controller offers a nice backup option for prolonged Wii U use while other third party options (e.g. Nyko?s U Boost) will release to prolong GamePad battery life.
The battery charging port on the GamePad is located at the top left while the bottom center also allows battery charging on the GamePad stand with the adapter plugging into the back.
When placed on a stand the GamePad should be in the horizontal position only, but gameplay incorporates the GamePad in several orientations include vertically and horizontally.
The touch screen on the GamePad controller measures 6.2 inches and acts as a second console when others want to use the television ? a defining feature for the Wii U. This unique two screen (a.k.a. ?asymmetric?) feature allows for individual experiences (e.g. television viewing, Wii U games, etc.) within the same shared viewing.
The GamePad screen has a 16:9 aspect ratio LCD touch screen plus motion control capabilities using an accelerometer, gyro sensor and magnetic sensor.
The Gamepad can also be used as a television remote control even while the Wii U console is turned off.
Traditional GamePad button controls include the directional pad, dual analog sticks, stick buttons, A/B/X/Y buttons, power button, home, select, start, +/ and directional pad. The design fits well and the lightweight structure fits the palms nicely.
The ZL/ZR button and L/R button orientation will take some adjustment. Users have a nicely contoured bar behind the GamePad where they can alternate buttons using their index fingers or use their index fingers for L/R buttons and middle finger for the ZL/ZR buttons.
Players can also push down on the dual analog sticks similar to L3 and R3 buttons on PlayStation 3.
The front-facing camera offers nice capabilities for video chats and other functions. Since the camera faces forward it would be great to eventually get a facial detection options where the system would automatically pause when someone is not in view. Another helpful energy-saving feature.
A white colored indicator light displays when there is a disc still inside the Wii U.
Open source code users can try out open source software ?distributed under the terms of various open source licenses, including the GNU Library General Public License 2.0, the GNU Lesser General Public license 2.1, the Mozilla Public License Version 1.1, and the Mini-XML License (collectively, the ?OSS Licenses?).? as stated on Nintendo?s website.

With the salary cap increasing by only a little in 2013, it?s safe to say that the franchise tags will increase by only a little, too.
Per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the NFL distributed at the league meetings in December the tentative franchise tenders for 2013.
For quarterbacks, the 2012 tender will be $14.6 million.? It was $14.4 million in 2012.
For running backs, the 2012 tender will be $8.0 million.? It was $7.7 million in 2011.
For receivers, it will be $10.3 million, up from $9.6 million.
For tight ends, the number climbs from $5.4 million to $5.9 million.
For offensive linemen (yes, they?re all jumbled together regardless of whether they play center, guard, or tackle), the franchise tender climbs to $9.6 million from $9.4 million.
For defensive ends, the $10.6 million tender in 2012 becomes $10.9 million in 2013.
For defensive tackles, the franchise tender will be $8.3 million, up from $7.9 million the prior year.
For linebackers, the number moves to $9.4 million in 2013 from $8.8 million in 2012.
For cornerbacks, the tender remains roughly the same, at $10.6 million.
For safeties, the new number is $6.7 million; last year it was $6.2 million.
For kickers and punters, the franchise number of $2.5 million from 2012 increases to $2.9 million.
Last year, the first under the new CBA, the franchise numbers dropped dramatically, even though the cap went up slightly.? The reduction comes from a new formula that takes the value of franchise tags for the last five years, adds them up, divides them by the total value of the salary cap for the last five years, and multiplies the resulting percentage by the salary cap for the current year.? So the number is ultimately driven by a percentage of the cap, not by what the highest-paid players at each position make.? Eventually, the franchise tags will settle in as a fixed percentage of the salary cap, remaining the same each year and only rising based on how much the cap rises.
For some players, the tag becomes higher because the franchise tag rules guarantee the greater of the standard tag or 120 percent of the player?s cap number from the prior year.
Jets quarterback Tim Tebow has acknowledged that he was upset when he learned last week that he had been bypassed on the depth chart by Greg McElroy. Now Tebow says his goal now is to become a good quarterback ? somewhere ? in 2013.
Tebow told ESPN?s Adam Schefter he is ?more determined than ever to dedicate my entire off-season to becoming the best quarterback I can be next season.?
Regarding the ESPNNewYork.com report that Tebow told Jets coach Rex Ryan he didn?t want to play in the Wildcat after he was informed that McElroy would start in place of the benched Mark Sanchez, Tebow admitted that he was upset, and he expressed his displeasure to Ryan. Schefter?s report does not specify, however, whether Tebow flat-out refused to play in the Wildcat when he found out on Tuesday that McElroy was starting, or whether Tebow merely said he was unhappy that he wasn?t getting the opportunity to start.
Whatever transpired between Tebow and Ryan, Tebow did tell Schefter that on Friday he told Ryan that he was willing to do whatever it took to help the team win. By that time, the Jets had been planning to use receiver Jeremy Kerley in the Wildcat role, and that?s what they did in Sunday?s game against the Chargers.
The fact that Tebow even had to express to Ryan that he was willing to do anything to help the team win is telling. If a player is conducting himself the right way, it should go without saying that he is willing to do whatever he has to do to help his team win. If the Jets? coaches needed to be reassured that Tebow was willing to do whatever he had to do to help the team win, that strongly suggests that Tebow isn?t quite the humble, hard-working player that he tries to portray himself as. The job of a football player is to play football the way his coaches tell him to play. It doesn?t matter if Tebow thinks he deserves to start ahead of McElroy. The Jets? coaches decided that McElroy was the starter for Sunday?s game, and Tebow?s job was to support the team in whatever role the coaches told him to play.
If Tebow ever expressed anything other than a firm commitment to doing whatever the coaches asked him to do, then he?s no better than Santonio Holmes, who was widely ripped last year for being a destructive force in the Jets? locker room. Holmes was pilloried all offseason for the way he acted at the end of the Jets? season in 2011. If Tebow is acting the same way at the end of the Jets? season in 2012, he deserves the same scorn.
As for Tebow?s ambitions of being a starter next year, well, good luck with that. There is exactly one NFL team that might be willing to give Tebow a shot, and that team ? Jacksonville ? would be willing to give him a shot for business reasons, not for football reasons. Tebow is desired in Jacksonville because he?s viewed as a good guy, not a good football player. And the news of the last 24 hours suggests that he?s actually not that good a guy.
WASHINGTON (AP) ? U.S. holiday retail sales this year grew at the weakest pace since 2008, when the nation was in a deep recession. In 2012, the shopping season was disrupted by bad weather and consumers' rising uncertainty about the economy.
A report that tracks spending on popular holiday goods, the MasterCard Advisors SpendingPulse, said Tuesday that sales in the two months before Christmas increased 0.7 percent, compared with last year. Many analysts had expected holiday sales to grow 3 to 4 percent.
In 2008, sales declined by between 2 percent and 4 percent as the financial crisis that crested that fall dragged the economy into recession. Last year, by contrast, retail sales in November and December rose between 4 percent and 5 percent, according to ShopperTrak, a separate market research firm. A 4 percent increase is considered a healthy season.
Shoppers were buffeted this year by a string of events that made them less likely to spend: Superstorm Sandy and other bad weather, the distraction of the presidential election and grief about the massacre of schoolchildren in Newtown, Conn. The numbers also show how Washington's current budget impasse is trickling down to Main Street and unsettling consumers. If Americans remain reluctant to spend, analysts say, economic growth could falter next year.
In the end, even steep last-minute discounts weren't enough to get people into stores, said Marshal Cohen, chief research analyst at the market research firm NPD Inc.
"A lot of the Christmas spirit was left behind way back in Black Friday weekend," Cohen said, referring to the traditional retail rush the day after Thanksgiving. "We had one reason after another for consumers to say, 'I'm going to stick to my list and not go beyond it.'"
Holiday sales are a crucial indicator of the economy's strength. November and December account for up to 40 percent of annual sales for many retailers. If those sales don't materialize, stores are forced to offer steeper discounts. That's a boon for shoppers, but it cuts into stores' profits.
Last-minute shoppers like Kris Betzold, of Carmel, Ind., embraced discounts that were available before Christmas.
"We went out yesterday, and I noticed that the sales were even better now than they were at Thanksgiving," said Betzold Monday while shopping at an upscale mall in Indianapolis. Betzold, who said the sluggish economy prompted her and her husband to be more frugal this year, noted that she saved about $25 on a Kindle Fire she found at Best Buy.
Spending by consumers accounts for 70 percent of overall economic activity, so the eight-week period encompassed by the SpendingPulse data is seen as a critical time not just for retailers but for manufacturers, wholesalers and companies at every other point along the supply chain.
The SpendingPulse data include sales by retailers in key holiday spending categories such as electronics, clothing, jewelry, luxury goods, furniture and other home goods between Oct. 28 and Dec. 24. They include sales across all payment methods, including cards, cash and checks.
It's the first major snapshot of retail sales during the holiday season through Christmas Eve. A clearer picture will emerge next week as retailers like Macy's and Target report revenue from stores open for at least a year. That sales measure is widely watched in the retail industry because it excludes revenue from stores that recently opened or closed, which can be volatile.
Despite the weak numbers out Tuesday, retailers still have some time to make up lost ground. The final week of December accounts for about 15 percent of the month's sales, said Michael McNamara, vice president for research and analysis at MasterCard Advisors SpendingPulse. As stores offer steeper discounts to clear some of their unsold inventory, they may be able to soften some of the grim results reflected in Tuesday's data.
Still, this season's weak sales could have repercussions for 2013, he said. Retailers will make fewer orders to restock their shelves, and discounts will hurt their profitability. Wholesalers, in turn, will buy fewer goods, and orders to factories for consumer goods will likely drop in the coming months.
In the run-up to Christmas, analysts blamed the weather and worries about the "fiscal cliff" for putting a damper on shopping. Superstorm Sandy battered the Northeast and mid-Atlantic states in late October. Many in the New York region were left without power, and people farther inland were buried under feet of snow. According to McNamara, the Northeast and mid-Atlantic account for 24 percent of U.S. retail sales.
Buying picked up in the second half of November as retailers offered more discounts and shoppers waylaid by the storm finally made it into malls, he said.
But as the weather calmed, the threat of the "fiscal cliff" picked up. In December, lawmakers remained unable to reach a deal that would prevent tax increases and government spending cuts set to take effect at the beginning of 2013. If the cuts and tax hikes kick in and stay in place for months, many economists expect the nation could fall back into recession.
The news media discussed this possibility more intensely as December wore on, making Americans increasingly aware of the economic troubles they might face if Washington is unable to resolve the impasse. Sales never fully recovered, Cohen said.
The results were weakest in areas affected by Sandy and a more recent winter storm in the Midwest. Sales declined by 3.9 percent in the mid-Atlantic and 1.4 percent in the Northeast compared with last year. They rose 0.9 percent in the north central part of the country.
The West and South posted gains of between 2 percent and 3 percent, still weaker than the 3 percent to 4 percent increases expected by many retail analysts.
Online sales, typically a bright spot, grew only 8.4 percent from Oct. 28 through Saturday, according to SpendingPulse. That's a dramatic slowdown from the online sales growth of 15 to 17 percent seen in the prior 18-month period, according to the data service.
Online sales did enjoy a modest boost after the recent snowstorm that hit the Midwest, McNamara said. Online sales make up about 10 percent of total holiday business.

Jets quarterback Tim Tebow has acknowledged that he was upset when he learned last week that he had been bypassed on the depth chart by Greg McElroy. Now Tebow says his goal now is to become a good quarterback ? somewhere ? in 2013.
Tebow told ESPN?s Adam Schefter he is ?more determined than ever to dedicate my entire off-season to becoming the best quarterback I can be next season.?
Regarding the ESPNNewYork.com report that Tebow told Jets coach Rex Ryan he didn?t want to play in the Wildcat after he was informed that McElroy would start in place of the benched Mark Sanchez, Tebow admitted that he was upset, and he expressed his displeasure to Ryan. Schefter?s report does not specify, however, whether Tebow flat-out refused to play in the Wildcat when he found out on Tuesday that McElroy was starting, or whether Tebow merely said he was unhappy that he wasn?t getting the opportunity to start.
Whatever transpired between Tebow and Ryan, Tebow did tell Schefter that on Friday he told Ryan that he was willing to do whatever it took to help the team win. By that time, the Jets had been planning to use receiver Jeremy Kerley in the Wildcat role, and that?s what they did in Sunday?s game against the Chargers.
The fact that Tebow even had to express to Ryan that he was willing to do anything to help the team win is telling. If a player is conducting himself the right way, it should go without saying that he is willing to do whatever he has to do to help his team win. If the Jets? coaches needed to be reassured that Tebow was willing to do whatever he had to do to help the team win, that strongly suggests that Tebow isn?t quite the humble, hard-working player that he tries to portray himself as. The job of a football player is to play football the way his coaches tell him to play. It doesn?t matter if Tebow thinks he deserves to start ahead of McElroy. The Jets? coaches decided that McElroy was the starter for Sunday?s game, and Tebow?s job was to support the team in whatever role the coaches told him to play.
If Tebow ever expressed anything other than a firm commitment to doing whatever the coaches asked him to do, then he?s no better than Santonio Holmes, who was widely ripped last year for being a destructive force in the Jets? locker room. Holmes was pilloried all offseason for the way he acted at the end of the Jets? season in 2011. If Tebow is acting the same way at the end of the Jets? season in 2012, he deserves the same scorn.
As for Tebow?s ambitions of being a starter next year, well, good luck with that. There is exactly one NFL team that might be willing to give Tebow a shot, and that team ? Jacksonville ? would be willing to give him a shot for business reasons, not for football reasons. Tebow is desired in Jacksonville because he?s viewed as a good guy, not a good football player. And the news of the last 24 hours suggests that he?s actually not that good a guy.

So, when you are walking, relaxing and or plain daydreaming, practice the techniques of What-ifs and have a ball of a time stimulating your brain juices!

One must remember that the What-ifs techniques are often used more to excite your imagination, not to develop a real solution to your problem. Though it happens!
The next step in the What-if process is to weigh up the responses and see if there lies a connection that may be used to solve the problem at hand.
Here are the steps of the What-ifs technique:
1.Write out specifically the nature of your challenge/problem. (How can I stop losing my car keys?
2.Ask as many WHAT-IF scenarios as you can. Any crazy what-ifs will do. Don?t be too pre-occupied with facts of the problems you want to solve. Imagine. Be a non-realist!
(What if I put my car keys within my body?)
3.Try to answer the what-if questions.
(I could develop a system whereby my thumb-print/ voice could be used to open the car?s door- yes; it?s been done already! The bio-metric technology)

Change management is often a make-or-break component of any major technology project and sometimes it takes serious steps to get it done right -- as serious as a funeral.
The Blandin Foundation, Minnesota?s largest rural-focused foundation, serving these communities with grants, scholarships, community leadership programs and public policy advocacy, took a creative approach when it implemented NetSuite recently.
Instead of following an antiseptic, formulaic approach that a Big Consulting firm might recommend, the foundation held a ?funeral? for its old ERP system, and similarly announced the ?birth? of the new solution from NetSuite and partners. NetSuite?s ability to significantly improve the Blandin Foundation?s grant management processes and back-office accounting software is important, but isn't what makes them truly unique as a stand-out grantee. The foundation took an exemplary, creative and highly effective approach to selecting its technology partners and introducing change management to its organization beyond the ?birth? and ?funeral.? Blandin?s approach offers valuable lessons for other organizations to follow.
Instead of a sterile RFP or hands-off vendor selection process, the Blandin Foundation asked its potential partners to take an extremely hands-on approach. NetSuite and our partners NPower and Celigo traveled to the foundation's rural Minnesota headquarters to spend time on the ground getting a true feel for how the organization operates. That cooperative visit set the tone for the entire project. Spend the first 30 minutes getting caught up on any bookkeeping requirements, such as capturing expenses.? The second half of the hour should be to review your key metrics (no more than 5 numbers).? Are you on track?? If so, what is working best?? If not, what needs to be fixed?

HONG KONG (AP) ? Stock markets in Japan and China, Asia's two biggest economies, rose Monday after Japanese conservatives who favor greater economic stimulus returned to power in a landslide election victory and China's new leaders promised more spending if needed to underpin a wobbly economic recovery.
Japan's Nikkei 225 index jumped 1.5 percent to 9,882.98, its highest level since April, after the country's Liberal Democratic Party swept back into power at weekend elections. Party chief Shinzo Abe, almost certain to become prime minister, favors increased spending on public works and setting a 3 percent economic growth target. He's also expected to lobby for stronger action by the central bank to break Japan out of its deflationary trap.
"The outcome of the Japan election should help support sentiment in the region," strategists at Credit Agricole CIB said in a research note.
Japanese export stocks rose as the yen weakened on expectations of looser monetary policy. Automaker Nissan Motor Co. rose 1.8 percent, Sony Corp. climbed 2 percent and Panasonic Corp jumped 4 percent. A weaker yen makes their goods cheaper for overseas buyers.
In mainland China, the Shanghai Composite rose 0.5 percent to 2,161.55 and the smaller Shenzhen Composite index climbed 0.3 percent to 818.28.
On Sunday, China's new Communist Party leaders under party General Secretary Xi Jinping pledged a "proactive fiscal policy" and "prudent monetary policy" in a statement carried by the official Xinhua News Agency. They were references to the willingness to boost spending if needed and keep credit easy so long as inflation stays low.
"I don't think the statement from the Communist Party is startling news, but what we see is that they still continue the stimulating policy and so I think it's good in the long run," said Linus Yip, chief strategist at First Shanghai Securities in Hong Kong.
The optimism failed to rub off on other Asian markets, which retreated slightly.
South Korea's Kospi lost 0.6 percent to 1,983.06 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng was down 0.4 percent at 22,521.79. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 shed 0.1 percent to 4,577.40. Benchmarks in Taiwan and New Zealand and Singapore also fell.
On Wall Street on Friday, the Dow fell 0.3 percent to close at 13,135.01 while the Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 0.4 percent to 1,413.58. The Nasdaq composite sank 0.7 percent to 2,971.33.
In currencies, the euro weakened slightly to $1.3154 from $1.3159 in late trading Friday. The dollar strengthened to 84.04 Japanese from 83.46 yen.
Crude prices rose. Benchmark oil for January delivery was up 10 cents to $86.83 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract settled at $86.73 on Friday.
It's the holiday season, when even Washington, D.C. gets a little poetic. John Hicks of the Washington Post reported last week that the big, bland federal government loosens its tie and sends out an official holiday poem each year. The poem's purpose (here's where the magic ends) is to educate federal employees on the dos and don'ts of accepting holiday gifts.
Commissioned by the U.S. Office of Government Ethics in 1994, the poem is, surprisingly, metrically sound. Impressive when you consider that the federal employee shoehorned into writing it had to do some serious acrobatics with the legal language. Take a look at this stanza:

The government's gift guide wasn't the only poem to make news in DC last week. As has become tradition, the White House Press Corps celebrated the year in politics by toasting a poem penned by Greg Clugston of Salem Radio Network (SRN) News. Clugston's poem is always set to the meter of "A Visit from St. Nicholas":
'Twas the night before Christmas and in the White House, Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, In hopes that a tax plan soon would be there. The holiday treats were stale and bland, After Mrs. Obama had sugar plums banned. The president was sleeping -- for the hour was late, He was tired and groggy, like the Denver debate.
This year's verse remembers the twists and turns of the election -- the 47 percent, Clint Eastwood, the chair -- and looks gloomily forward to the challenges ahead. But, as always, it ends with a twinkle: the arrival of Santa Clause -- or, rather, the closest thing to Santa that the year of politics has given us. While past "Santas" have included George W. Bush, Bill Clinton and Herman Cain, this year, Clugston brought in a news-making politician who looks born the play the part.
Suddenly, on the South Lawn, there arose such a clatter, Obama looked up to see what was the matter. Then what did appear, to wondering eyes? But a man of great stature -- and considerable size. His eyes -- how they twinkled! His dimples how merry! His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry! Chubby and plump and his eyes a bit misty, There stood New Jersey Governor Chris Christie. He had come from the coast, badly battered by Sandy, Seeking FEMA assistance and some holiday candy. Christie praised POTUS for keeping Jersey afloat, A far cry from his GOP convention keynote. Riding high in the polls, Christie's eyes held a gleam, Was he thinking of running in 2016? A White House bid comes at quite a high price, So the president offered some political advice. And I heard him exclaim, though it sounded absurd: "Merry Christmas to all! And don't mess with Big Bird!"

There are some interesting developments in the Research & Education Networks (RENs) space. While there is continued interest and innovation in the REN space around OpenFlow and SDN, there are some related developments in terms of network architecture. After a brief overview of one such interesting development, I will then relate this development back to Brocade.

To start with, I?d like to describe an emerging network architecture called a ?Science-DMZ?; which basically moves the high-performance computing (HPC) environment of a research & education campus network into its own DMZ. The reference architecture looks something like this:

As the diagram shows, the traditional ?general purpose? campus network sits behind one or more security appliances, which are typically stateful firewalls. This DMZ, or perimeter network, protects the internal network, systems and hosts on the campus network from external security threats. The research and science HPC environment also traditionally connected into the same campus network; so it was also behind the DMZ firewall. This presented some challenges to the HPC environment in terms of data throughput (eg. TCP performance), dynamic ?ad-hoc? network connectivity, and general network complexity.

The concept of a Science-DMZ emerged where the connectivity to the HPC environment is moved to its own DMZ; in other words, this environment is no longer connected behind the campus DMZ and firewalls. It now sits on a network that is purposely engineered to support the high performance HPC requirements. As the diagram shows, the science and research enviornment is now connected to a Science-DMZ switch, which in turn connects to a Science-DMZ border router. Access control lists (ACLs) in the border router are leveraged to maintain security of this HPC environment. In addition to simpler access control mechanisms, when a scientist or researcher needs to set up a logical connection to another scientist or researcher to share data, the HPC network can be directly provided that connectivity with provisioning in the border router. For network performance testing and measurement, the perfSONAR tool is included in the reference architecture.

After the communication breakdown over surge pricing last New Year’s Eve, Uber is taking precautions to make sure users are aware of fare increases next week. Surge pricing has become more common now among Uber users but when fares increase dramatically, it catches consumers off guard. So to prevent any surprises. Uber customers will be alerted to the surge pricing multiple which they have to confirm and accept before making any request for a ride. Uber says that when there are extreme spikes in demand on the evening, customers will also have to take Uber?s ?Surge Sobriety Test.? And Uber?s Fare Estimator will give all customers the ability to estimate their fare prior to any ride request. Uber warns in a blog post: It?s going to be a crazy night and Ubers are going to be pricey, so here are a few pointers to keep in mind. The fare estimate feature will only be available for the iPhone app, unfortunately. And all riders will need to accept the fare multiplier before finalizing a booking. Uber says the average surge multiple will be about 2 times normal prices, during the worst times (12:30 AM until 2:45 AM), but prices during extreme spikes could cost you $100 before time and mileage charge. Uber adds that the most expensive times to take an Uber are 8:30pm ? 9:45pm and 12:30am ? 2:45am. The best times to take an Uber on NYE are before 7pm, 10pm ? 12:10am and 3am on. The company’s CEO and founder Travis Kalanick will also be holding a live chat for any one who has questions about surge pricing on New Year’s Eve. Uber clearly learned its lesson from last year, when users were caught off guard by steep prices caused by surge pricing. For example, one user was charged $75 for a two-minute car ride. With the sobriety test, and fare estimator, the company is giving users all the information they need to decide if a pricey car ride is worth the splurge. The sobriety test is particularly interesting, and I wonder if this will become more widely used in the app. Ride-sharing app SideCar also warned users today of its surge pricing that will take place on New Year’s Eve.
