93% Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol

What really sets MI - Ghost Protocol apart from your garden variety potboiler are the outstanding action sequences. Actual location shooting at three locales: Moscow, Dubai and Mumbai, highlight set pieces with astonishing stunts. Each individual display would have provided sufficient excitement independently, but put together and there's scarcely time to breathe. When the team initially attempts to infiltrate the Kremlin, the operation is giddy with disguises, gadgets and humor. There's a hallway screen that's an ingenious technology that Benji and Ethan use to remain undetected in the fortified complex. Later, accessing a security room at the Burj Dubai from the outside of the skyscraper is a heart pounding spectacle. Ethan wears a pair of electronic friction gloves that enable him to climb the glass exterior of the Burj. You'll gasp at the difficulty of the mission. That MI - Ghost Protocol is far and away the best one yet, has got to be one of the biggest surprises of 2011. Some credit should go to Director Brad Bird for breathing new life into this series. Best known for writing and directing modern animated classics The Incredibles and Ratatouille, his facility for storytelling is clearly an asset here. There has been care to create personalities that seem human so when they're hanging by an arm off the side of the tallest building in the world, we genuinely feel scared. When Jeremy Renner's character is required to leap down a vertical cooling tunnel wearing a magnetic suit that will allow him to float, you can see the uncertainly on his face before he jumps. Those subtle touches are endearing because they make these individuals easier to identify with. These aren't indestructible automatons, these are real human beings and we care about them.

Verizon offers vague statement, no apology for LTE downtime

Earlier this week, you may have noticed that your Verizon Wireless LTE smartphone couldn't do inconsequential things like update your inbox, or pull up a webpage. This happened once. Then twice. And finally a third time this month. And what's the root cause? "Growing pains," according to the carrier's latest statement. And since growing pains are a natural consequence of adolescence, there's no reason for Verizon to issue any kind of apology to its paying customers, who naturally expect such inconsistencies from "the most advanced 4GLTE wireless network in the world." Now, some of you also reported issues connecting to the 3G network, which Verizon reps claim didn't experience any downtime. Instead, your hiccups were a result of being "unable to connect to the 3G Network as quickly as [Verizon] would have liked." Have any questions? Of course you don't. Such can be expected from any carrier, just like the requirement to fork over two bucks for the convenience of paying your monthly bill.

Leonardo DiCaprio?s New Girl?

Everybody?s favorite actor, Leonardo DiCaprio has been spending a lot of time lately with a girl named Erin Heatherton. She completely fits the bill of his type of girl, but is it just a fling? We know he loves his models. He has been linked to a handful of the most high profile models in the world, but never seems to settle down. It?s clear that he likes really skinny blonde haired women that have the ?model look.? The last actual relationship that we know of was with Gossip Girl Blake Lively, who also fits his style of women. But now they are split up and it is only a matter of time before he had to move on. Here is the real shocker, something that is totally unlike him: this girl is a Victoria?s Secret model. See pics of them together here. I?m starting to wonder if he just picks up a catalog and skims through until he finds a girl he likes. It?s actually a little strange. But I guess he is Leo after all. The only catch is that these two are tying to play it low key. According to Perez Hilton, they took the time to [...]

Whale sperm, orgasmic feet top 2011 bad science list (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? From whale sperm to colon cleansers to the shape of a woman's foot when she has an orgasm, celebrities did not disappoint during 2011 with their penchant for peddling suspect science in the world's media.

In its annual list of what it considers the year's worst abuses against science, the Sense About Science (SAS) campaign named U.S. reality TV star Nicole Polizzi, Republican presidential candidate Michelle Bachmann and American singer-songwriter Suzi Quatro as top offenders, with their dubious views on why the sea is salty, the risks of cervical cancer vaccines and the colon.

"I used to get a lot of sore throats and then one of my sisters told me that all illnesses start in the colon. I started taking a daily colon cleanser powder mixed with fresh juice every morning and it made an enormous difference," Quatro told the Daily Mail newspaper.

But SAS was keen to dispel such myths. It asked qualified scientists from various disciplines to comment on some of the worst celebrity science offences.

"The colon is very important in some diseases, but it certainly is not the cause of all illnesses," said Melita Gordon, a consultant gastroenterologist said in the review.

"Sore throats do not come from your colon; they are caused by viruses that come in through your nose and mouth. Taking 'colon cleansers' has no beneficial effect on your throat - or on your colon."

While the review is partly about entertainment, the campaign group stresses it also has a serious aim - to make sure pseudo-science is not allowed to become accepted as true.

After Bachmann used an appearance on a U.S. television show to tell a story of a woman from Tampa, Florida, who said her daughter had become "mentally retarded" after getting an HPV vaccine designed to protect against cervical cancer, doctors said they feared the damage done may take many years to reverse.

"It's tempting to dismiss celebrity comments on science and health, but their views travel far and wide and, once uttered, a celebrity cancer prevention idea or environmental claim is hard to reverse," said SAS's managing director Tracey Brown.

"At a time when celebrities dominate the public realm, the pressure for sound science and evidence must keep pace."

The review also highlighted a bizarre quote from U.S. TV personality Polizzi, who declared recently: "I don't really like the beach. I hate sharks, and the water's all whale sperm. That's why the ocean's salty."

Simon Boxall, a marine expert and oceanographer dismissed Polizzi's suggestion. "It would take a lot of whale sperm to make the sea that salty," he said.

Some of the most intriguing pseudo-scientific suggestions came via repeated second hand information picked up at parties - never the most reliable source.

Christian Louboutin, a French footwear designer, was taken with something a fellow party guest told him about shoes.

"She said that what is sexual in a high heel is the arch of the foot, because it is exactly the position of a woman's foot when she orgasms. So putting your foot in a heel, you are putting yourself in a possibly orgasmic situation," he explained.

Kevan Wylie, a consultant in sexual medicine, responded drily that it's important to differentiate cause from effect.

"A woman's foot may be in this position during orgasm, but that does not mean that putting her foot into this position under other circumstances will result in orgasm," he said.

Tahoma High graduate Chris Powers earns All-America honors at Eastern Washington for second straight year | Football

Tahoma High graduate Chris Powers was one of three Eastern Washington University football players to earn All-America honors this week.

Senior center?Powers, who was named to the All-America second team, finished his career with 35 starts -- the third-most among all Eastern players on offense -- in the 36 games he played as an Eagle.

In winning All-America honors as a junior in 2010, he represents the 17th time an EWU offensive lineman has earned All-America accolades in the last 18 years (1993-2010). He was a first team All-Big Sky selection in both 2010 and 2011, and Powers represents the 19th and 20th times an EWU offensive lineman has been honored on that squad since 1993.

In 2011 he started all eight games he played, and the Eagles led the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision with an average of 368.5 passing yards per game. Eastern was also seventh overall in total offense (447.4) and 27th in scoring (32.4). He was a 15-game starter in 2010 when EWU ranked 22nd in the FCS in total offense (397.1 yards per game), as well as rankings of 26th in passing (241.0), 49th in rushing (156.1) and 18th in scoring (31.5). As a 12-game starter in his sophomore season, he helped Eastern rank in the top 10 in four offensive categories in FCS, including passing (3rd, 321.3), total offense (4th, 462.2) and scoring (8th, 33.7).

Ohio plane crash leaves 2 dead, 1 injured (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Two people were killed and one was injured when their private plane crashed on Saturday in southeastern Ohio, authorities said.

The single-engine aircraft went down at the edge of the Vinton County Airport near the town of McArthur, roughly 65 miles southeast of Columbus, Ohio, at about 1:50 p.m. local time on Saturday, Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Elizabeth Isham Cory said.

There were three people on board the plane, Cory said. Two died and the third, a male, was flown to The Ohio State University Medical Center in Columbus, according to an Ohio State Highway Patrol dispatcher.

"The FAA is still gathering information regarding the departure point and intended destination," Cory said. The cause of the crash was under investigation.

NFL preview: Cowboys vs. Eagles

COMPILED FROM WIRE REPORTS

Philadelphia Eagles at Dallas Cowboys

When: 3 p.m., Fox, KTXX-FM (104.9), KXXS-FM (92.5, Spanish)

Records: Eagles 6-8, Cowboys 8-6

Storyline: The biggest concern for the Cowboys is being very thin at running back if Felix Jones (hamstring) can't go.

Overview: The Eagles slapped around the Cowboys 34-7 on Halloween eve as LeSean McCoy ran for 185 yards. Dallas is in good shape for the playoffs but Philadelphia needs a miracle. If the Giants win, the Eagles are out of playoff contention. Two of the NFL's sack leaders will be featured. Philadelphia's Jason Babin leads the league with 18 sacks, three shy of Reggie White's team record set in 1987. Dallas' DeMarcus Ware is third with 16. Dallas is playing games on consecutive Saturdays for only second time in team history. The other time was 1974.

The New Buffy Needs a New Screenwriter

Fans who hate the idea of a big-screen revamp (ha!) of 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' that doesn't involve creator Joss Whedon, will be pleased to hear that the project has hit a major roadblock: First-time screenwriter Whit Anderson's script "fell far short of expectations," the LA Times is reporting, and it now has been "rejected completely." The Times' Geoff Boucher says that a new writer is being sought, but the remake of a remake "may have lost some steam."

As one insider told him, "If you're going to bring it back, you have to do it right. [Anderson] came in with some great ideas and she had reinvented some of the lore and it was pretty cool, but in the end there just wasn't enough on the page."

Whedon, who's now busy shooting 'The Avengers,' commented last November, "This is a sad, sad reflection on our times, when people must feed off the carcasses of beloved stories from their youths." Being Whedon, he still had a sense of humor, of course, adding, "just because they can't think of an original idea of their own, like I did with my Avengers idea that I made up myself."

As if we need to tell you, 'Buffy' started life as a panned '90s movie starring Kristy Swanson, then -- with Whedon calling the shots -- became a critical and cult favorite TV series starring Sarah Michelle Gellar.

Chrome 15 overtakes IE 8 for top browser spot

Google

By Athima Chansanchai

If you're reading this on Chrome, you're part of a wave that has ditched Internet Explorer or Firefox and helped vault Google's browser to the top Web browser spot worldwide.

We've been watching for a while now as reports have shown a consistent rise in Chrome's popularity. We saw how in one report, it's already gone past Firefox, knowing it was just a matter of time before it usurped one of the longest reigning dynasties in the browser world, IE.

But wait, there is a caveat to this: Chrome 15 beat IE 8, specifically, this one week at the end of November, with 23.6 percent of the worldwide market, compared to IE 8's at 23.5 percent.?With all the versions of IE floating around, IE is still No. 1 in the world, but Chrome is right behind it.

StatCounter

Ireland-based?StatCounter???which posts Web analytics based on aggregate data it collects from a?sample exceeding 15 billion pageviews per month (including 4 billion in the U.S.),?collected from the StatCounter network of more than 3 million websites???released a statement?about Chrome 15's ascension, humbling the initial enthusiasm of any Google devotee when it also made it clear that in the?U.S., reports of IE's demise are still premature. According to StatCounter, It was still able to capture?27 percent of browser action last week, compared to 18.1 percent for Chrome 15.

Different companies will issue different stats on just how much of a lead IE still has on Chrome, with companies such as?NetMarketShare?showing?IE's year-long steady free fall, but still at about 52 percent a month ago.?

Chrome has made a steady rise as IE declines, but Firefox still stands in its way. But not by much. And by StatCounter's measure, in the world outside the U.S., Chrome already brushed past Firefox in November, when it wrested the No. 2 spot with 25.69 percent of the worldwide market (up from 4.66 percent in November 2009) compared to Firefox's 25.23 percent.?

Will 2012 be the year that sees the fall of IE everywhere, including the U.S.? Take our poll and let us know which browser you're using.

Russia pledges at least $10 billion to save euro (AP)

BRUSSELS ? Russia, hoping to keep its largest export market from collapsing, will give at least $10 billion to the International Monetary Fund to help support the struggling euro currency, an aide to President Dmitry Medvedev said Thursday.

Russian officials have said in the past that the country would offer up to $10 billion. But Arkady Dvorkovich, a Medvedev economic adviser, indicated the total may be greater because Russia has a big economic stake in the European Union, where a debt crisis is dragging down economies and the 17-nation eurozone.

"We are ready to contribute our part via the IMF. We are committed to do it. Ten billion dollars is the minimum commitment," Dvorkovich told journalists reporting from the 28th EU-Russia summit in Brussels, where other major issues included visa liberalization and the contentious Russian election.

Russia exports more to the EU than to any other market, and Russia is the EU's third-largest trading partner. Total trade amounts to euro245 billion ($318 billion). Russia also is the EU's most important source of energy imports, accounting for nearly a quarter of its natural gas consumption and 30 percent of its oil.

In opening remarks, Medvedev said "it is no secret" that the EU is Russia's major economic partner and that Moscow is worried about the euro's troubles.

European Council President Herman Van Rompuy, meanwhile, acknowledeged that Russia and the EU "are strongly interdependent." Van Rompuy is hosting Medvedev for the twice-yearly meeting.

Russia's ambassador to the EU, Vladimir Chizov, said Medvedev would be ready for any questions about alleged election fraud in Russia's Dec. 4 parliamentary elections.

The EU has avoided overt criticism of the elections, which have sparked mass protests in Moscow and other cities. But European parliament speaker Jerzy Buzek called Wednesday for new free and fair elections and a probe into reports of fraud and intimidation.

"The voice of the people protesting on the streets for more than one week must be heard," Buzek said.

Still, economic issues were dominating the talks, which come as the World Trade Organization is set to approve Russia's membership. Russia ? the largest economy still outside the WTO ? had been trying to join for 18 years. A Swiss-brokered deal with Georgia last month cleared the last major hurdle for Russia.

Medevedev thanked the EU for its support of Russia's candidacy, saing "it will give a strong impulse to our cooperation."

The two sides also are set to launch, after years of negotiations, a set of joint steps that will lead to visa-free travel for Russian citizens ? a long-standing irritant in relations. The measures include the introduction of biometric passports, as well as improved border management to combat transnational crime, terrorism and corruption.

Chizov said Syria and Iran were also among topics of discussion. Russia has blocked a bid by the United States and EU nations to impose sanctions against Syria, where a government crackdown on dissidents has killed thousands, and opposes any further moves on Iran, whose nuclear program worries the West.

Congress weighing length of jobless benefits (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Is there any downside to extending federal jobless benefits, as Congress is about to do? The benefits are a crucial lifeline to the longtime unemployed. But they also can be a disincentive to looking for work and prolong joblessness, economists say, as lawmakers weigh shortening them.

If Congress does nothing, the current law that provides federal benefits to augment state assistance that last for only 26 weeks will expire at the end of this month. As a result, more than a million out-of-work Americans could lose their benefits in January, and a total of five million could lose them by year's end.

In states with high or rising unemployment, the ceiling on federal and state benefits combined is now 99 weeks. The Republican-led House has passed a bill that extends the coverage but gradually reduces it by 20 weeks by mid-2012. An improving job market could reduce eligibility for extended benefits by another 20 weeks in some of those states, making the new effective ceiling 59 weeks.

At the heart of the controversy is something economists and politicians have long debated. Conservatives argue that prolonging government assistance to the unemployed can discourage active job searching so long as it lasts, keeping jobless rates higher than they would be if aid were ended.

Supporters of a full new extension, including President Barack Obama and most congressional Democrats, argue that these are unusually dire times and that jobs are harder to find than after run-of-the-mill recessions. Therefore, additional aid is warranted and can contribute directly to economic growth, they say.

Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Analytics, backs the full extension because "it is needed and necessary given the stress in the labor market."

"But this is not a slam-dunk positive," Zandi said. "There is something to the argument that the length of unemployment benefits creates disincentives to work." He said some studies found that benefit extensions have added as much as half a percentage point to the unemployment rate. That would suggest the most recent unemployment rate, for November, would be 8.1 percent rather than 8.6 percent. "Still, on net, the positives outweigh the negatives," Zandi said.

Douglas Holtz-Eakin, a former head of the Congressional Budget Office who was 2008 GOP presidential nominee John McCain's top economic adviser, said there are both benefits and costs to extending the benefits.

"It gives them some cash and allows them time to perhaps find a better match, a better job for them in the future." But Holtz-Eakin also said "there is unambiguous evidence that longer unemployment insurance extends spells of unemployment" and is especially hard on older workers whose skills diminish the longer they're out of work.

"You've got to figure where to draw the line. There's no magic number," said Holtz-Eakin, now president of the conservative American Action Forum. The House bill "is an attempt to do this," he said.

In the current extensions, the first one voted by Congress in early 2008, some 17.6 million Americans have collected federal benefits. How much varies from state to state, but the nationwide average is about $300 a week.

Republicans say they are willing to extend the benefits, but also want to cut back the coverage by 20 weeks.

They argue that even under the full extension sought by Obama, federal benefits tied to state-by-state levels of unemployment will likely expire in 20 states under the current formula as jobless rates decline. Even under Obama's plan, the cap would become 79 weeks instead of 99 weeks.

The House formula reducing the cap "reflects the more normal level typically available following recessions," said House Ways and Means Chairman Dave Camp, R-Mich.

But economists say there is no guarantee that unemployment rates won't rise once discouraged workers start looking for jobs again and are officially counted by the government as rejoining the ranks of unemployed.

The unemployment rate dropped to 8.6 percent last month after hovering at or above 9 percent for more than two years. But part of the decline came because many jobless workers became discouraged and stopped looking for work and left the work force.

The government's official count of unemployed workers is 14 million. But add to those what the government calls discouraged workers because they have quit looking for a job or are working only part-time because they can't find full-time jobs, and the unemployed and underemployed together total 25 million.

Democrats said the GOP legislation would hit states with the highest unemployment rates the hardest. They tried unsuccessfully to amend the bill to guarantee 99 weeks of maximum benefits without regard to jobless rates in individual states.

The Republicans' version passed the House on Tuesday on a largely partisan vote as part of a larger measure that also extends the Social Security payroll tax cut and includes an unrelated provision to force a presidential decision on a controversial Canada-U.S. oil pipeline. It's now before the Senate, where Democratic leaders have pronounced it dead.

Despite the standoff, renewing the federal jobless benefits seems likely before year's end since both sides favor some form of extension.

Here's how the existing program works.

States shoulder the initial costs of jobless benefits, for up to 26 weeks. Then a federal program takes over, under a law first passed in 2008, offering up to 53 weeks in four categories based in part on state-by-state unemployment rates, and a final 20 weeks of extended benefits in states with the highest or rising unemployment.

Thus, out of work Americans are eligible for up to a total of 99 weeks of combined state and federal benefits.

Labor Department and congressional studies show that there are 4.3 job seekers for every single job opening. Four out of 10 jobless have been without work for more than six months, and nearly one-third have been unemployed for at least one year.

According to a Democratic analysis, the Republican bill would reduce benefits by 40 weeks in 21 states plus the District of Columbia: Alabama, California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Idaho, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Washington.

All other states would lose between 14 and 34 weeks of federal benefits, the analysis said.

Labor economist Heidi Shierholz at the liberal Economic Policy Institute said that the maximum 99 weeks of benefits is still needed because "things are not really expected to get better next year."

She acknowledged there was some disincentive effect from prolonging unemployment benefits, but said it was slight. Continuing benefits to longer-term unemployed people makes economic sense, she said. "They are cash-strapped. So they have very little choice but to spend that money immediately. It just goes right into the economy."
